We're open and we want your submissions - we are calling for your abstracts with more opportunities that ever before to present your ideas, research, outcomes and directions to a national audience.

The 2015 Advance Care Planning & End of Life Care National Conference, including the annual “Victorian Advance Care Planning Implementation Forum”, is being held over 24-25 November 2015 in Melbourne. 

This year, the annual National presentation of issues is being held back to back with the Victorian Forum as part of a package, open to everyone under one registration process to ensure the best opportunities for learning needs.

The abstract submission process is NOW OPEN to close by 19 September. Opportunities for oral presentations to share your work with a national audience will be right across the national plenary and concurrent sessions on Day 2, and poster display across both days.

​Faculty strategic grants scheme 2016 - applications now open

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (FMNHS) Strategic Grants Scheme (SGS), consisting of approximately $2M per year, is an essential resource for research development.

Under SGS, the Faculty aims to strengthen the capability and international competitiveness of its researchers by supporting high quality proposals. Other objectives include the identification and development of young research leaders, enabling engagement with the FMNHS research platforms, and collaboration with Monash University Malaysia.

The SGS grant application process is tailored to enhance strategic gains to the Faculty research portfolio. To ensure a central focus on strategic enhancement of research, funding will be awarded to applicants whose projects best demonstrate a combination of scientific quality and the potential for strategic gain for the Faculty.

Australia-China Joint Research Centres - applications now open

Applications are open from today for the Australia-China Joint Research Centres and will close 14 September 2015.

Programme guidelines and application instructions are now available and will assist to complete the application form.

Information sessions will be held in major capital cities in August 2015.

Further information will be published on the ACSRF website once dates and venues are confirmed and will be provided directly to the contact person submitting the request to the Department for the Valid Registration Number.

An Eligible Research Organisation (ERO) may only submit one JRC application as the leading ERO per round. An ERO that has applied for funding for a JRC may be a collaborating partner in another JRC.

The Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon Ian Macfarlane announced the next round of the Australia-China Joint Research Centres (JRCs) and priority areas for the round in a media release on 2 July 2015.

It is expected six new centres will receive support under the ACSRF, with each to receive up to $1 million over three years to further research collaboration between Australia and China.

VESKI Inspiring Women Fellowships for 2015

VESKI Inspiring Women Fellowships for 2015 - APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

VESKI, supported by the Office of the Lead Scientist, is calling for applications for the 2015 Inspiring Women Fellowships. This scheme, funded by the State Government of Victoria, is designed to support female leaders who are planning for, experiencing, or returning from a career break.

The inspiring women fellowships will provide the opportunity to allow these female leaders to remain competitive in their field; enhancing the current talent pool and affecting cultural change.

Applications are sought from early to mid-career female researchers in STEM disciplines within a Victorian academic or research institution who are experiencing or anticipating difficulties juggling their career and family or carer commitments, or have other compounding reasons for requiring the support of a fellowship.

During 2015/16 three fellowships will be made available and successful individuals may receive up to AUD150,000 distributed over a period of three years.

Monash-Newcastle Partnership 2015 Enabling Funding application

The Monash-Newcastle partnership builds on each institution’s recognised commitment to relevance and maximising the local and global impact of our work. Both organisations have significant strength and focus on translational health and the partnership will further develop this using existing linkages and investigator-led collaborations that have grown organically over the past 5 years.

Enabling Funding Available

The purpose of the 2015 Enabling Funding is to provide travel funds (airfare and accommodation expenses) to enable academics to explore potential collaborations (or further existing) between Monash University and Newcastle University. The awards are for a maximum of £2500 or AUS$5000 and any investigator within Monash or Newcastle Universities whose area of research is broadly within the Biomedical Sciences is eligible to apply.

Call for applications - Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation $1.9M grant funding round

In its inaugural funding round, Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation is making available $1.9M in grant funding in the form of two types of grants:

Accelerator Grants

Grants of up to $500,000 (GST exclusive) per annum are being made available for two to three years duration (a maximum of $1.5M over the next 3 years) to support specific projects and/or infrastructure for research into pancreatic cancer.

The objective of the Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation Accelerator Grants is to: Fund high quality projects that can clearly demonstrate support for the Foundation’s vision ‘To break through 40 years of no progress by doubling the number of people who survive pancreatic cancer by 2020’.

‘Woolies on Wheels’ Innovation Grants

The Woolies on Wheels Innovation Grants (x4 available) are in recognition of the efforts of the Woolworths' business leaders who cycled the 2014 ‘Woolies on Wheels’ charity cycle to raise funds in support of Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

The grants will support $100,000 (GST exclusive) in seed funding for innovative pancreatic cancer projects with a desire to increase interest and investment in pancreatic cancer research.

The objectives of the ‘Woolies on Wheels’ Innovation grants are to:

• Support established scientists and/or early career researchers to develop preliminary data necessary to support pursuit of additional funding in subsequent years

• Encourage and retain talented skilled individuals in the field of pancreatic cancer.

Emphasis will be given to support novel approaches examples of which would include immunotherapy.

Nominations for ECR Publication Prize open now

Nominations for the Faculty ECR Publication Prizes are now open so it is a great time to take a look at your 2014 publications and decide which one to nominate.

New this year is that epubs published online in 2014 will be eligible for the 2015 Publication Prize and there will also be additional non-monetary prizes available for ECR's holding an externally funded Fellowship.

These prestigious prizes are for a scientific discovery or technological innovation, or a series of such achievements that significantly advances knowledge. 2015 Victoria Fellowships

Victoria Fellowships provide a travel grant of up to $18,000 to undertake a short-term overseas study mission to assist in developing a commercial idea; undertaking specialist training; or career development not available in Australia. Additionally, Fellows can apply for the Australian French Association for Science and Technology (AFAS) Associate Award valued at up to $5,000.

Call for applications: ​Ramaciotti Foundations Health Investment Grants

The Ramaciotti Foundations Health Investment Grants are now open.

The grants support individuals in undertaking health or medical research with a potential path to clinical application within five years. Grants are aimed at autonomous early-career investigators, who are taking or have recently taken a substantive position.

Under the guidelines, Monash ​University ​may submit a maximum of three applications and no more than one from any given department. Therefore there will be an internal ranking process.

In order to facilitate the ranking process all intending applicants will need to:

• Confirm matching university support with HoS/HoD (this is a condition of application)
• Complete (but don't submit) an application in Perpetual Trustee's online application system
• Create a PDF of the application and send this to the Medical and Health Sciences Team mhs@monash.edu by COB 19 May​ 2015​.

Apply: Visit to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA

The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) invites expressions of interest (EOIs) from junior scientists who are no more than 30 years of age at time of application, to visit one of the Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA. Proposals in any health-related field of natural science will be considered. Only Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents living in Australia at the time of application are eligible to apply. The successful applicant will receive a contribution towards the direct return air travel between Australia and the host institution up to a maximum of AU$2,600 and a once-off living allowance up to a maximum of AU$400.

Apply: (FASIC) program Early Career Fellowships

The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) invites applications from Australian researchers for the France-Australia Science Innovation Collaboration (FASIC) program Early Career Fellowships in 2015.

The FASIC Program is a joint fund to support high calibre Australian and French early career researchers (ECRs) nominated by their institutions, to expand research and innovation activities and to initiate sustainable research networks and linkages to support both countries’ research and innovation priorities. The grant (up to $7,000) can be used towards the cost of travel to and within France, living allowance and participation in conferences/symposia.

Australian-American Fulbright Scholarships Information Day

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission will be in Victoria to conduct a series of targeted information sessions on Fulbright Scholarships on 5 May 2015. RMIT will partner with the Fulbright Commission as the State University Host for the Fulbright Victoria Day. An exciting all day showcase symposium for all Victorian medical research students (UROP, Honours, Masters, PhD, and more) to present their work, listen to some of Victoria’s top medical researchers, and network in a friendly environment! During the symposium, research students participate in oral, “3-minute-thesis” styled oral, and poster presentations in ALL disciplines of medical research.

For each educational level, many prizes and awards are given including a ticket to the prestigious ASMR GALA dinner, where the awardee will have an opportunity to dine with well-known researchers.

Apply: simulation patient safety research projects

The Department of Health and Human Services (the department) is seeking suitably qualified and experienced service providers to undertake research into the impact of simulation on patient safety.

To support the sustainability of the simulation sector in Victoria there is a need to build an evidence base to demonstrate the full value of simulation. There is now significant research to show that simulation-based health education promotes learner acquisition and maintenance of clinical knowledge, attitude and skills. There are comparatively few studies on the impact of simulation on patient outcomes and the collateral effects at a population level.

Apply: Faculty Bridging Postdoctoral Fellowships

Applications are now open for 2015 Bridging Postdoctoral Fellowships (Round 2). 

The Fellowships provide competitive funding to support the career development of promising newly-qualified postdoctoral researchers at Monash University. 

They are intended to provide initial support while applications are made for externally funded fellowships such as NHMRC Training Fellowships, ARC Postdoctoral Fellowships, etc. Applications should be made by the applicant’s (i.e. intended Fellow’s) mentor at Monash University. 

The Faculty usually awards up to 4 Fellowships in each round. Competition is therefore at a high level and mentors should carefully consider candidates before nominating them.

Closing Date: Monday 11 May 2015 at 11:55pm (AEST)

Submission Process: Submit the original application (and supporting evidence) as a single PDF document to medicine.research@monash.edu by the closing date.

Australian Medical Student Journal submissions open

Submissions are now open to all Australian medical students for volume 6 issue 2 of  the Australian Medical Student Journal magazine and closes 13th March, 2015.
