The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences this month presented the David de Kretser Medal and Lifetime Achievement Award to two distinguished medical scientists and educators.
Emeritus Professor Richard Larkins, AO, was this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Professor Ben Canny received the David de Kretser Medal.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution — nationally and internationally — to human health and wellbeing, while the Medal is awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to any area of the Faculty’s operation over a significant period of his or her working life.
“Professor Larkins has made a significant contribution to both Monash and the wider Australian public through his work as a medical researcher as well as his six years as Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University. He is an outstanding role model for anyone in the medical or education industry and it is a pleasure to add his name to the highly distinguished list of recipients to have received the award.” Professor Mitchell said of Emeritus Professor Larkins, AO.
Professor Mitchell lauded Professor Canny for his work in the Faculty as Deputy Dean (MBBS).
“Ben was instrumental in leading the development of the MBBS curriculum and forged critical links which enabled the delivery of Monash MBBS across metro and rural Victoria as well as Malaysia. He oversaw expansion of MBBS cohort size and provided inspiring leadership in developing and expanding the intercalated research year The Bachelor of Medical Science.”
Professor Canny joined the staff of Monash University in March, 1992 as a lecturer in the Department of Physiology. Ben maintained an active research and teaching profile, focusing on various aspects of stress, reproductive and metabolic endocrinology, as well as on ethics and professional and clinical skills, and most recently medical education, especially assessment. Ben then became closely involved in the medical education activities, being appointed Deputy Dean (MBBS) of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash.
Emeritus Professor Larkins, AO was Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash from September 2003 to July 2009. Prior to his appointment here he was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne from 1998 to 2003. Before that he was Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, holding the James Stewart Chair at the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1984 to 1997. His clinical and research interests were in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine.
