Clinical and Rehabilitative Medicine Research Program ReconstructiveTransplantation Research Funding Opportunity for Fiscal Year 2014 (Pre-Announcement)

The Fiscal year 2014 (FY14) Defense Appropriations Act provides $15
million (M) to the Department of Defense Reconstructive Transplantation
Research Program (RTR) to support the science and execution of complex
limb and face transplants. This program is administered by the US Army
Medical Research and Materiel Command, the Clinical and Rehabilitative
Medicine Research Program (CRMRP), through the Office of Congressionally
Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) and the Tissue Injury and
Regenerative Medicine Project Management Office.

The CRMRP is providing the information in this pre-announcement to allow
investigators time to plan and develop applications. An FY14
DMRDP-CRMRP-RTR Program Announcement and General Application Instructions
for the following award mechanism are anticipated to be posted on the
Grants.gov website in July 2014. Pre-application and application deadlines
will be available when the Program Announcement is released.

Focus Areas:

The CRMRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative
research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues
in the field of reconstructive transplantation research (RTR),
specifically vascular composite allotransplantation (VCA)-focused
research. VCA refers to the transplantation of multiple tissues such as
muscle, bone, nerve and skin, as a functional unit (e.g., a hand, or face)
from a deceased donor to a recipient with a severe injury. Applications
from investigators within the military Services and applications involving
multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military
Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other Federal
Government agencies are highly encouraged. Though the RTR Award mechanism
supports groundbreaking research, all projects must demonstrate solid
scientific rationale with military-relevant utility. The CRMRP encourages
research projects that specifically address the critical needs of the RTR
program in specific Focus Areas including:

Immune Rejection
Understanding mechanisms of immune rejection Immunomodulation approaches
and mechanisms, e.g., tolerance induction, chimerism Optimizing
immunosuppressive drug regimens

Graft Surveillance-Clinical Monitoring
Histopathology
Imaging
Immune profiling, e.g., gene expression, graft rejection markers, cytokine
screens Vasculopathy

Standardization of Processes and Protocol Collaboration in clinical
protocol standardization, which may include endpoint selection, assay
selection and functional outcomes measures Techniques for tracking
long-term outcomes Standardization of procedures for pathology

Reconstructive Transplantation Research

Principal Investigator: Independent investigators at all academic levels
(or equivalent) and from industry
*       Pre Clinical Studies: projects that focus on preclinical research
that addresses at least one RTR Award Focus Areas, or identifies a unique
focus area applicable to RTR. These studies may utilize animal models
and/or human cell lines or samples
Clinical Research/ Clinical Trials: the clinical research/ clinical trial
must be more than 50% of the proposed work and must be initiated by the
second year of the project.
*       Pre Clinical studies: Maximum funding of $750,000 plus indirect
costs.
*       Clinical Research/ Clinical Trials: Maximum funding of $2,000,000
plus indirect costs.
*       Period of performance not to exceed 4 years.
*       Indirect costs may be proposed in accordance with the
institution's rate agreement.

A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP
electronic Biomedical Research Application Portal (eBRAP)
(https://eBRAP.org) prior to the pre-application deadline. Applications
must be submitted through the  US federal government's single-entry portal,

Grants.gov. Submission deadlines are not available until the Program
Announcement is released. Requests for email notification of the Program
Announcement release may be sent to help@eBRAP.org
