Prime Minister's prizes for science

Help us recognise Australia’s best scientists and innovators, by nominating them for one of the Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science.

The prizes highlight achievements in science research. And this year, the contribution of science to our economy will be explicitly recognised with a new prize, The Prime Minister’s Prize for the Commercial Application of Science.

Congratulations to 2014 Robert Power Surgical Prize winner Lukas Sahhar

Congratulations to final year Monash University Medicine student Lukas Sahhar, who was recently awarded the winner of the 2014 Alfred Hospital Robert Power Prize in Surgery. This final year medical student prize involved both written assessment and a viva voce examination on surgical knowledge and skills. Lukas has thoroughly enjoyed his surgical rotations at the Alfred Hospital and said, "The Alfred offers excellent surgical learning opportunities. I am very grateful for the teaching my rotations' teams have offered."

The award will be presented at the Alfred Staff dinner in 2015. Lukas is looking forward to commencing his internship at the Alfred in January 2015.

New prizes for Central Clinical School medical students

Hatem Salem Award for Medical Research Excellence

  • $500 prize awarded to a Year 5D student who has completed a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) at Central Clinical school based on a one page application outlining the impact of his or her research (including publications, presentations, ongoing work, translation). A panel reviews the applications and decides on the winner.

Nip Thomson Award for Medical Student Clinical and Research Excellence

  • $500 prize awarded to a Year 5D student who has completed a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) at Central Clinical School and receives the highest score for his or her general medical rotation at Alfred Health.
These prizes have been created this year. Emeritus Professor Hatem Salem AM was founder of the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases and retired at the end of 2012. Emeritus Professor Napier ('Nip') Thomson AM was Head of Central Clinical School until 2011.
