Gender and Sexuality Workshop

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is offering a workshop addressing sexual orientation and gender equity issues in health care training and delivery on Tuesday 29 September from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

Venue: Room C119, 10 Chancellors Walk (formerly Building 13C) Clayton Campus.

Speaker, Gene Moore, is a Student Rights Officer with the Monash Students’ Association and has a long-standing interest in defining the impact of sexual orientation issues in health care delivery.

Who should attend?

The provision of optimum services by health care professionals (HCPs)requires an understanding of issues affecting people of diverse genders and sexualities.

This workshop is targeted at academic and professional staff supporting students in training, as well as students and staff seeking awareness of potential influences on their own practice.

Key issues in training and clinical settings for both HCPs and their patients will be explored including:
  • Unaddressed heterosexism (assuming everyone is straight) and homophobia
  • Issues of confidentiality and the impact of fear of disclosure to colleagues and family on health care provision
  • The marginalisation of women in environments with a high degree of masculine ideology
  • Male perceptions of demasculisation as women achieve leadership roles
Participants will be able to develop strategies to contribute to more open and safe learning work environments in order to improve health care training and delivery and patient outcomes.

This workshop is being sponsored and promoted by the Diversity and Inclusion Committee chaired by Associate Professor Jenny Newton and organised by Dr Jane Bourke and Melissa McNicol.
