John appointed Sir John Monash Professor


Prof John McNeil was recently honoured for his career contribution to Monash University by being appointed as a Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor. In addition to meeting rigorous academic criteria, this appointment also recognises outstanding achievements in development of academic infrastructure and a major overall contribution to the university over a sustained period. John McNeil joins a small handful of staff recommended by their Dean for this level of professional recognition.

Leading medical researcher to head the NHMRC


Distinguished medical researcher, Professor Anne Kelso AO, has been appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

The Minister for Health, Sussan Ley, said Professor Kelso would take up her new position with the NHMRC in April. “Professor Kelso’s distinguished career in medical research and her track record in internationally competitive research in immunology and influenza make her an ideal choice to head up the NMHRC,” Ms Ley said. “Professor Kelso’s experience and expertise will be a great asset to Australia’s leading expert body for health and medical research and help Australia build on its reputation as a world leader in medical innovation.”

New appointment will lead to improved outcomes for patients with prostate cancer at Monash Health


Dr Azad

Professor Peter Ebeling AO, Head, Department of Medicine is delighted to announce that medical oncologist and researcher Dr Arun Azad, will take up appointments at Monash Health and Monash University’s School of Clinical Sciences (SCS) in the second half of 2015 to focus on pre-clinical and clinical translational research in genitourinary cancers.

Dr Azad’s translational research will focus on the role of new chemotherapeutic agents on castration-sensitive prostate cancer, leading to lead to improved outcomes for patients with prostate cancer at Monash Health in the near future.

Leading critical care physician and researcher appointed to Monash


Professor Shehabi

Renowned critical care physician and researcher Professor Yahya Shehabi has been appointed Program Medical Director Critical Care at Monash Health.

Highly regarded in the critical care community internationally, Professor Shehabi’s professional experience includes being an examiner of both the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM); Immediate past Chairman of the Intensive Care Foundation of ANZ; Chair of the NSW Regional Committee for CICM; Director Australian New Zealand Intensive Care Society; Chair Practice and Economic Committee for Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society(ANZICS) and he has actively participated in the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group(CTG) research network.
