For your undergraduate students: Cancer Research Summer Vacation Studentships 2015-2016

Cancer Council Victoria is an independent volunteer based charity which was established in 1936. Our mission is to lead the fight against cancer. Our core business is cancer control. We conduct and support research as well as delivering state-wide support and prevention programs and advocating regulation and other interventions to reduce the physical and emotional burden of cancer.

We are offering a number of Cancer Research Vacation Studentships with the object of stimulating interest in cancer research in Victoria.

Who can apply?

Undergraduate students enrolled in relevant disciplines at any Victorian University. Students are not eligible after completing their final year, except for 3rd year science students who are proceeding to the fourth year of an honours degree. Overseas students are eligible to apply, but need to have a student visa that allows limited work to be undertaken.

How long does the studentship last and when is it for?

The period of tenure is up to a maximum of 6 weeks during the summer vacation.

How much will be paid?

Studentship holders will receive $300 per week. A class ruling has been obtained in relation to the income tax status of the Studentships. Provided various conditions are met, our studentships are exempt from income tax. The class ruling is No. CR 2002/4 effective from 1 December 2001.

What are the criteria for selection?

Applications are judged on the applicant's academic record and value of the research project.

How many studentships will be offered?

Up to 16 studentships are available. No more than two studentships will be funded at any one laboratory. Applicants cannot apply for a student placement in a laboratory where they've previously held a studentship.

Where do I find a placement?

The studentship project needs to be part of a cancer research program being conducted at a university or other research organisation. You need to contact cancer researchers to ask if there is a project available for you to work on that they'd be willing to supervise.

Your University Department or Faculty Office, or the Office for Research, may also have suggestions of organisations where cancer research is currently being carried out.

The application form provides for both a description of the work to be done and a written acceptance by the supervisor. Therefore, before completing the description of the work proposed to be undertaken, you should consult with the person who'll supervise the work.

Download the application form, certification page, guide to applicants and instructions below. Please read the instructions before starting. Read the form carefully and complete all sections. Name the completed document [Surname][First name initial]-STUApp (e.g. SmithJ-STUApp).

On reading your completed application form, your supervisor and RAO should affix their signatures in the certification page provided. Name the completed document [Surname][First name initial]-Certify (e.g. SmithA-Certify).

A copy of your full university results together with the explanation of results should be included. If you haven't yet received this semester/year’s results, please provide your most recent ones.

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified by email early November of the success of their application.

Successful applicants are required to write a short report after their placement, covering the work carried out and the benefits and experience gained from the studentship.

A notice for display may be printed to bring this to the attention of those in your institution who are likely to be interested.
