The newly established Jacques Miller Medal recognises research of the highest standing in the field of experimental biomedicine, celebrating the career of eminent biologist Professor Jacques Miller.
Academy President Professor Andrew Holmes congratulated all the award winners and recipients of grants. He said the winners “represent an incredible list of Australia’s scientific achievements across a huge range of areas, from medicine to maths and engineering."
Professor Cowley leads a global effort to find new diabetes drugs. In 2001, he discovered how the body informs the brain about how much body fat we have, and how much sugar there is in our blood. Through his understanding of these pathways in the brain he has devised new drugs to treat obesity, and he has recently discovered why obesity causes high blood pressure. He has received several awards for his research.
“I am very honoured to receive an award named after Professor Miller, who is a giant in Australian medical research,” Professor Cowley said.
