Prof John McNeil to investigate cancer cluster at Parliament House

Head of the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Professor John McNeil is the chairman of a panel looking into a possible cancer cluster at Parliament House in Spring St. The expert panel will bring together six leading cancer researchers including SPHPM Adjunct Professor Graham Giles from the Cancer Council and Professor Kelly Phillips from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

State MPs have been asked to help investigate fears of a possible cancer cluster, Prof McNeil noting that the records would be used to determine whether the number of diagnoses among parliamentarians “is more than would be expected among any group of men and women in Victoria”.

All current and former MPs and parliamentary staff who have worked at the Spring St building since 1982 will be asked to provide information to the study to determine whether the number of cancer cases is unusually high.
