Monash students create a tool to detect anaemia by taking a selfie

Monash medical students, Jarrel Seah and Jennifer Tang recently won the Microsoft Imagine Cup for developing an app which can detect anaemia with a simple selfie. Coined as Eyenaemia, the app is a simple, non-invasive screening tool for the disease which is caused by a deficiency in red blood cells.

Once you snap a selfie of your lower eyelid, Eyenaemia analyses the colour of the eyelid  and calculates the risk of anaemia. The photographs can also be entered into a website or sent via email.

Jarrel and Jennifer took home $50,000 and the Imagine Cup in front of 3,900 Microsoft’s global employees attending the TechReady19 event at the Washington State Convention Centre.  The pair have also won the opportunity to sit down with Microsoft Founder Bill Gates for a private mentoring session and they will receive an invitation to work with Microsoft YouthSpark for a week.
