Do you suffer from Knee Pain? The Osteoarthritis of the Knee Statin (OAKS) Study

The Osteoarthritis of the Knee Statin (OAKS) Study

We would like to invite volunteers aged 40-70 years and who suffer from knee pain to join our clinical trial based at the Alfred Hospital.

The OAKS study is a 2 year randomised controlled trial with the aim to understand how the use of cholesterol lowering medication (statins) may be used to slow down disease progression in those who suffer from knee osteoarthritis.

Currently there is no treatment that slows the progression of knee osteoarthritis. Statins have a broad range of effects including anti-inflammatory effects. There is evidence that this may play a part in the role of slowing the progression of knee osteoarthritis. If statins are effective, they will offer a new way to slow the progression of knee osteoarthritis.

As part of the study participants will undergo screening and monitoring blood samples, a plain knee x-ray and two knee MRIs.
